10 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek – Northern Circuit Route Overview
The 10-Day Northern Circuit Route with Crater Camp is the longest, most scenic, and best-acclimatized route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting from Lemosho Gate, this journey takes you through lush montane forest and across the wide Shira Plateau before venturing into the remote northern slopes—an untouched and tranquil side of the mountain rarely experienced by other trekkers.
This incredible circuit circles nearly the entire mountain, allowing for a gradual and steady ascent that maximizes acclimatization and dramatically improves summit success. The sweeping views across Tanzania and Kenya, combined with the solitude of the northern wilderness, make this trek one of the most immersive experiences on Kilimanjaro.
A major highlight of this route is the exclusive overnight stay at Crater Camp (5,790m), one of the highest campsites in the world. Nestled at the base of Uhuru Peak, Crater Camp offers rare access to the Rebmann Glacier and the Ash Pit—an unforgettable expedition moment reserved only for seasoned adventurers.
This trek begins and ends in Moshi, Transfers to and from Londorossi Gate are included. Personal trekking gear and accommodation before/after the climb are not included, but Leen Adventures can arrange everything upon request.

Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Begin with registration at Londorossi, followed by a short drive to Lemosho Gate. Trek through a beautiful montane forest filled with colobus monkeys and exotic birdlife. The gradual ascent lets you ease into the rhythm of the trek. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp) for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Climb out of the rainforest and into heather and moorland vegetation. The trail opens up to incredible views of the Shira Ridge and the surrounding valleys. Continue across volcanic formations until you reach Shira 1 Camp in the afternoon.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
A shorter trekking day designed for acclimatization. Cross the expansive Shira Plateau—one of the highest plateaus in the world. Optional hikes to Shira Cathedral offer dramatic scenery and added acclimatization. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp for rest and overnight.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Moir Hut via Lava Tower
Ascend steadily to Lava Tower for lunch at 4,600m, your highest point so far—an important acclimatization milestone. Afterward, descend to Moir Hut, a remote and quiet camp at the base of a large lava cone. Enjoy a peaceful evening in this less-visited corner of Kilimanjaro.
Day 5: Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
Begin with a steep climb out of Moir Valley before dropping into the scenic northern slopes. This region offers vast views over the Kenyan plains and unmatched quietude. Rolling terrain and gradual ascents lead you to Buffalo Camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 6: Buffalo Camp to Third Cave Camp
Today features gentle traverses across the remote northern circuit. With fewer trekkers on this route, enjoy silence and expansive vistas. Arrive at Third Cave Camp in the early afternoon, allowing plenty of time to rest and acclimatize.
Day 7: Third Cave Camp to School Hut
Gradually climb into the high alpine desert zone as you head toward School Hut, your final base before the summit attempt. The air becomes thin, and the terrain more rugged. Spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and preparing for the long summit night ahead. Early dinner and early sleep are essential.
Day 8: School Hut to Uhuru Peak via Crater Camp
Begin your summit push just after midnight. Climb through steep switchbacks to reach Gilman’s Point and continue upward to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, descend into the crater for a rare overnight at Crater Camp, located beside the glaciers. Explore the area and rest in this extraordinary high-altitude environment.
Day 9: Crater Camp to Mweka Camp
Descend past Stella Point and onward to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue the long descent to Mweka Camp. Re-enter moorland and eventually rainforest zones. Enjoy your final night on the mountain with warmer air and significantly more oxygen.
Day 10: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi
Complete your descent through the lush forest to Mweka Gate. After signing out and receiving your summit certificate, your driver will transfer you back to Moshi. Enjoy a hot shower, a hearty meal, and well-deserved rest at your lodge.

💰 Tipping Guidelines
Tipping is an important tradition on Mount Meru treks. Your mountain crew—including lead guides, assistant guides, cooks, and porters—work tirelessly to support you during the climb, and tips are a meaningful way to show appreciation for their dedication and effort.
Suggested Tipping Rates:
Tips are usually handed over at the farewell ceremony at the park gate on the last day of the trek. It is best to place tips in an envelope and give them to the lead guide, who will distribute fairly among the team.
Tips should be in US Dollars (clean, undamaged notes) or Tanzanian Shillings. While tipping is not mandatory, it is customary and greatly appreciated. For larger groups, tips are often shared equally among trekkers.
