6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking – Marangu Route

6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking – Marangu Route Overview

The Marangu Route, famously known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and most well-established path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s the only route that provides hut accommodations along the way, offering trekkers a comfortable and moderate ascent to Africa’s highest point — Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters). This 6-day trek leads you through a variety of ecological zones, from lush rainforest and heather moorland to alpine desert and the icy summit.

Perfect for those seeking a steady, scenic climb with the convenience of sleeping huts rather than tents, the Marangu Route treats trekkers to stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Along the lower slopes, you’ll encounter rich biodiversity, including endemic plants and playful blue monkeys in the forest.

Guided by experienced mountain experts and supported by skilled porters and cooks, this journey blends challenge, natural beauty, and cultural experiences, culminating in an unforgettable sunrise atop the Roof of Africa with Leen Adventures.

📒 Please Note:
This trek begins and ends in Moshi, with transfers to and from Marangu Gate included, personal gear, and accommodation before or after the climb are not included, but Leen Adventures can arrange these upon request.

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,860 m) – Mandara Hut (2,700 m)

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours | Distance: 10 km | Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate for registration and briefing. The trek begins through dense rainforest alive with birdlife, moss-covered trees, and occasional sightings of blue and colobus monkeys. The path is well-trodden but humid and slippery, so trekking poles are recommended. Arrive at Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700 m) – Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours | Distance: 12 km | Habitat: Moorland

Depart after breakfast through rainforest, gradually giving way to open moorland. Enjoy scenic views of the towering Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. You may spot giant lobelias and groundsel along the way. Arrive at Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend the night overlooking vast plains below.

Day 3: Acclimatization at Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Spend a full day at Horombo Hut to acclimatize and adjust to the altitude. You can take a short hike toward Mawenzi Hut (4,600 m) to enjoy panoramic views and return for lunch. This day greatly increases your chances of a successful summit

Day 4: Horombo Hut (3,720 m) – Kibo Hut (4,703 m)

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours | Distance: 10 km | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today’s trek ascends gradually across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape is stark and dry with fewer plants, offering clear, open views of the mountain’s upper reaches. Arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon for an early dinner and rest before your midnight summit attempt.

Day 5: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Hiking Time: 6–7 hours to summit, 5–6 hours descent | Distance: 16 km | Habitat: Arctic

Rise around midnight to begin your ascent under starlight. The path is steep and demanding, zigzagging up to Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) on the crater rim. From here, continue to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa, arriving at sunrise for breathtaking views over glaciers and clouds. After photos and celebrations, descend to Kibo Hut for rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.

Day 6: Horombo Hut (3,720 m) – Marangu Gate (1,860 m) – Moshi/Arusha

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours | Distance: 18 km | Habitat: Moorland & Rainforest

Descend through the scenic moorland and lush rainforest toward Marangu Gate, where you’ll be awarded your official summit certificate. Your Leen Adventures driver will then transfer you back to Moshi or Arusha, where a hot shower and a comfortable bed await your well-deserved rest.

💰 Tipping Guidelines

Tipping is an important tradition on Mount Meru treks. Your mountain crew—including lead guides, assistant guides, cooks, and porters—work tirelessly to support you during the climb, and tips are a meaningful way to show appreciation for their dedication and effort.

Suggested Tipping Rates:

  • Lead Guide: USD 20–25
  • Assistant Guide: USD 15–20
  • Cook: USD 12–15
  • Porter: USD 8–10

Tips are usually handed over at the farewell ceremony at the park gate on the last day of the trek. It is best to place tips in an envelope and give them to the lead guide, who will distribute fairly among the team.

Tips should be in US Dollars (clean, undamaged notes) or Tanzanian Shillings. While tipping is not mandatory, it is customary and greatly appreciated. For larger groups, tips are often shared equally among trekkers.
