Includes/Excludes

📍Day 1: Moshi – Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

After breakfast and briefing in Moshi, drive to Lemosho Gate (2,100m) for registration. Begin your trek through montane rainforest teeming with wildlife. The trail ascends gradually to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m), your first overnight stop under the forest canopy. Expect a gentle yet exciting introduction to the mountain.

  • Meals: Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp (Tented)

Leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone. Hike along ridges and open terrain to reach Shira 1 Camp (3,610m) on the Shira Plateau. Views of Kibo Peak begin to unfold. This relatively short day aids acclimatization while giving you a taste of the mountain’s openness and altitude.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp (Tented)

Today is a gentle walk across the plateau with sweeping views. You’ll ascend gradually to Shira 2 Camp (3,850m), enjoying stunning vistas of glaciers and volcanic cones. This day allows for rest, acclimatization, and exploration of the high-altitude environment.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp (Tented)

Climb to Lava Tower (4,630m) for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m). This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adjust. The route traverses alpine desert and rocky outcrops before reaching the lush Barranco Valley.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Barranco Camp (Tented)

Begin the day with a climb up the Barranco Wall—a highlight of the trek. Continue over glacial valleys and alpine ridges to Karanga Camp (4,035m). This day is crucial for acclimatization and prepares you for the summit push. Expect rewarding views of the Southern Icefields.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Karanga Camp (Tented)

Trek steadily to Barafu Camp (4,640m), your base camp before summit night. Eat and rest early in preparation for the midnight ascent. The landscape becomes barren and cold. The air is thinner—rest and hydration are key for the summit attempt.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Barafu Camp (Tented)

Start your ascent at midnight toward Uhuru Peak (5,895m), arriving at sunrise. Celebrate your achievement before descending to Barafu for rest, then onward to Mweka Camp (3,100m). This is the longest and most rewarding day of the trek.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Mweka Camp (Tented)

After breakfast, complete your final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate and drive back to Moshi for a hot shower, celebration, or onward journey.

  • Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

How fit do I need to be to climb Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route?

You should be in good physical condition and capable of hiking 6–8 hours a day. While no technical climbing is required, the altitude can be challenging. Prior preparation through cardio, strength training, and multi-day hikes is highly recommended. The Lemosho Route’s gradual ascent is ideal for acclimatization, giving you a higher chance of success if you’re reasonably fit and determined.

Kilimanjaro has five climate zones—from tropical forest to arctic summit. Expect hot, humid weather at lower altitudes and freezing temperatures near the summit. Rain is possible at any elevation, especially in March–May and November. Dressing in moisture-wicking layers and having quality rain gear is key to comfort and safety throughout the climb, regardless of the season.

You’ll need quality trekking boots, a sleeping bag rated to -10°C, waterproof jacket and pants, thermal layers, gloves, hat, sunglasses, and a headlamp. Trekking poles, hydration systems, and snacks are also helpful. A detailed packing list will be provided. Porters carry your main gear, but you’ll carry a daypack with essentials like water, snacks, and extra layers.

Meals are prepared fresh by the camp chef and are designed to be nutritious and energizing. Expect porridge, eggs, soup, rice, vegetables, pasta, and meats. Hot drinks like tea, coffee, and cocoa are available. Special dietary needs (vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.) can be accommodated with advance notice. Staying hydrated and eating well is crucial at high altitudes.

Yes, travel insurance is mandatory. Your policy must include high-altitude trekking (up to 6,000m), emergency evacuation, and medical coverage. Make sure to carry a digital and printed copy of your policy. Some packages also cover trip delays, baggage loss, or cancellation. You should also register for AMREF Flying Doctors for extra peace of mind during the climb.

Your guides are trained in first aid and altitude sickness response. Daily health checks (pulse oximeter readings, symptom checks) are performed. Emergency oxygen and a first aid kit are carried at all times. If symptoms of acute mountain sickness arise, your guide may recommend descent. Your safety is the top priority throughout the journey.

If you’re unable to continue due to health or fatigue, arrangements are made for a safe descent with a porter or assistant guide. Your well-being is always prioritized. Evacuation protocols are in place, and the team ensures you’re monitored and supported. While it’s disappointing to turn back, safety is paramount, and your guides will offer reassurance every step of the way.
